Asafoetida
Asafoetida
is a tree resin with a pungent smell grown in Iran and Afghanistan
and dates back to Alexander the Great in 4BC. Used as a spice
in Rome, it also was used extensively in Indian medicine and cooking
for thousands of years. Asafoetida is known to provide relief
for the following:
- flatulence
- respiratory conditions - asthma, bronchitis and whooping cough
- spasmodic disorders - anti-spasmodic
- stress - helps to calm
- digestive issues
- insect bites - acts as a repellent
- menstrual disorders
- This herb is not as widely known in the Western world but
has shown promise in treating a variety of ailments in the Middle
East. Small pieces of the resin used to be hung around childrens'
necks so that the strong sulfur smell would help to ward off
germs and disease.
