Cloves
Cloves
are known as a warming herb and provide a sweet and fragrant taste
to many baked goods and culinary dishes. Cloves are the hand picked
unopened pink flower buds off the 10-12 ft high evergreen clove
tree. The trees are native to the Moluccas or the 'Spice Islands'
of Indonesia and the buds are left to dry until they turn brown.
Cloves are well known for their medicinal properties and have been used to aid the following ailments:
- Congested cough - chew a clove with a crystal of common salt to ease expectoration and relieve throat irritation
- Asthma relief - boil 6 cloves in 30ml of water and take 1 tsp 3x/day as an expectorant
- Toothache - chew a clove, antiseptic properties help to lessen infection and relieve toothache
- Earache - saute a clove in a tsp of sesame oil and put 3-5 drops of warm oil in the ear for relief
- Muscle cramps - apply the oil of a clove as a poultice near the affected area
Cloves have been the subject of many health studies. Eugenol is the primary component of clove's volatile oils, functions as an anti-inflammatory substance. Cloves also contains a variety of flavonoids which also contribute to clove's anti-inflammatory (and antioxidant) properties.
Cloves make a wonderful addition to all natural wellness and can easily be added to your favorite dishes or used in many ways as home remedies.
